API Visits With House Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee Staff

As part of ongoing efforts to emphasize industry’s commitment to safety, this week the American Petroleum Institute (API) met with Republican and Democratic senior staff with the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on the proactive approach to pipeline safety and to continue to bolster a collaborative working relationship as Congress seeks to consider pipeline safety reauthorization next year. 

This was a follow up discussion to API Midstream Group Director Robin Rorick’s testimony before the Subcommittee last month and the Midstream Committee meeting with Congressman Mike Capuano (D‑MA), the lead Democrat on the Subcommittee. 

During last month’s hearing Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (D‑CT) echoed industry’s request to use innovative technology and the need to bolster the safety of culture within the industry, and at last week’s meeting with API Midstream company executives Congressman Capuano (D‑MA) expressed a willingness to work in an open and constructive manner on pipeline safety issues. 

During this week’s meeting, API emphasized the importance of new and innovative safety and inspection technologies, discussed reform proposals that can help enhance pipeline safety, and explained how API standards, including API Recommended Practice 1173 – Pipeline Safety Management Systems, can help to foster and reinforce a culture of safety throughout an operator’s organization.
